There is a high population of Black Bears in our area. The many lakes and rivers have created a perfect habitat for big bears. The massive volume of water from Lake Superior helps moderate temperatures during the winter months, which helps with the survival rates of cubs. This also contributes to the amount of natural food in the area.

To increase the success of our bear hunts, we only have 6 tree stands set up, which are far apart. This increases the opportunities for our hunters, which is why bears taken in our hunting management area average around 250 pounds. Our hunts are set up for both rifle hunting and bow hunting. For larger hunting groups, we can utilize a secondary Bear Management Area, which produces the same level of great hunting.
Black Bear hunters sometimes see wolves at the bait stations. With this in mind, if a bear hunter sees a wolf, they can buy a small game license and take a wolf if the opportunity arises.
